WHICH OPEN-END WRENCH TO CHOOSE – ONE THAT WILL WITHSTAND EVERY REPAIR?

OPEN-END WRENCHES – ŚRUBEX CHORZÓW, UL. NOWA 117 – TECHNICAL STORE, SCREWS, BOLTS, TOOLS, POWER TOOLS, TECHNICAL CHEMICALS, PPE

This is the most basic tool in any workshop toolbox – the open-end wrench will be useful in many repairs and renovations. Its main function is tightening and loosening bolts and nuts. Since this tool should serve you for many years, choose the best possible wrench on the market. What should you consider when buying one?

Types of Open-End Wrenches

An open-end wrench typically features one or two working ends shaped like the letter C, designed for tightening and loosening bolts and nuts (usually with hex heads). In tool shops, you’ll also find angled open-end wrenches – one of the ends is set at an angle to the handle, increasing comfort in use. A large subcategory includes combination wrenches – with an open-end on one side and a ring-end of the same size on the other. The ring allows full engagement with the bolt head, improving grip and preventing rounding. Ratcheting combination wrenches feature a mechanism that speeds up work and adds convenience. Models with a pivoting head allow access to hard-to-reach places. There are also special wrenches for plumbing.

NOTE: For inch-size bolts and nuts, use inch-size wrenches.

What Material Should Workshop Tools Be Made Of?

The quality of the wrench – and how long it lasts – depends on the material used, specifically its hardness and corrosion resistance. Choose tools made from rust-resistant materials that meet ISO or DIN standards.

Expert Tip

A highly regarded material for wrench production is chrome-vanadium steel (CrV). The chromium addition provides resistance to wear, oxidation, and corrosion. CrV wrenches also withstand high temperatures and may be nickel-plated for extra rust protection.

Should You Buy Individual Wrenches or a Full Set?

If you already have a few good open-end wrenches in your workshop, it makes sense to buy only the missing sizes. Look for double-ended wrenches, giving you two sizes in one tool (e.g., 14 and 15 mm). If you’re just starting your tool collection, consider a ready-made set of quality open-end wrenches. A set in a case is easier to transport and helps keep your tools organized. Complete sets are usually more affordable than buying wrenches individually. Single wrenches range in price from a few to several dozen złoty, depending on whether they are for casual DIY or professional service work.
