BRUSH – HOW TO CLEAN BRUSHES AFTER USE?

Properly cleaned after use, paint brushes can be reused many times. How do you remove leftover paint without damaging the bristles? Here are some effective methods for cleaning different types of paint from your brush!

How to clean a brush after using emulsion or latex paint?

Emulsion paints are water-based, so they can easily be removed using warm water with soap or dishwashing liquid. Make sure the water is lukewarm—not too cold or too hot. For stubborn residues, use a stiff-bristled hand brush. Finish by rinsing the brush under running water and letting it dry.

The same applies to cleaning latex paint from a brush. Running water and a soft towel can help gently wipe off the paint from the bristles. If the paint has dried, use slightly warmer water (but not hot), as high temperatures could dissolve the glue holding the bristles in place.

Expert Tip

To prevent the bristles from deforming during cleaning, tie them with a rubber band beforehand—this keeps them in place and helps maintain their shape.

Cleaning a universal brush with solvent-based paint

Solvent-based paints are a bit more difficult to remove. Start by wiping off as much paint as possible using an old newspaper or cloth. Then place the brush in a container filled with solvent—remaining paint should dissolve. To remove the lingering solvent odor, rinse the brush under running water.

If you plan to reuse the brush shortly after, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap to prevent the paint from drying. This way, you won’t have to clean it after each use—just clean it when you’re finished with all your painting.

When working with solvents, wear protective gloves to avoid skin irritation. People with asthma or respiratory conditions should wear masks to avoid inhaling fumes.

How to clean a brush with oil paint?

Oil paint should be removed while it’s still wet—removing dried oil paint is quite difficult. Prepare a well-ventilated area, gloves, and a mask to protect against fumes. Place the brush in a container filled with paint thinner and leave it overnight. By morning, the paint will settle at the bottom of the container.
