PLIERS FOR ELECTRICIANS – OVERVIEW OF AVAILABLE TOOLS
Before planning any electrical installation work in our home, we should equip ourselves with tools designed for electricians.
Here is an overview of electrical pliers available on the market that may come in handy.
VDE-certified tools for electricians
These types of tools protect us from alternating current up to 1000 V and direct current up to 1500 V. This value is usually printed on the tool’s housing – so we can easily check what kind of work they are intended for. VDE tools typically have yellow-dominant handles and a triangle symbol with embossed “VDE” letters, although this is not mandatory.
Crimping pliers
Before choosing the right crimping pliers, we should consider what we will use them for – different terminals vary greatly, which is why crimping pliers for ferrule terminals and telephone connectors look completely different.
Wire stripping pliers
Wire strippers come in three types – front, side, and automatic – each designed for different types of wires. Front strippers allow manual adjustment, side ones have several hole sizes, while automatic strippers adjust to the wire diameter on their own.
Steel hardness is also an important factor. The harder the jaws of the pliers, the more versatility we gain – allowing us to work with terminals made from various materials.
Other electrician’s pliers
During electrical installation work, we can also use other types of electrician tools. These include:
– Side cutting pliers – useful for side-cutting materials of various hardness, such as cables, pins, and wires;
– Installation electrician’s pliers – used for cutting cables and wires, as well as stripping insulation. Their shape allows for working in hard-to-reach places;
– Long-nose semi-round electrician’s pliers – designed for working with flat and round cables. They help grip both hard and soft materials;
– Long-nose round electrician’s pliers – used for gripping and bending wires and other metal components;
– Ferrule crimping pliers – used for crimping end sleeves to wires and conductors;
– Electrician’s cable cutting pliers – allow easy cutting of copper and aluminum cables without crushing them. They can also be used for stripping insulation and sheaths;
– Angled electrician’s pliers – allow for precision work in tight spaces. Suitable for bending wires and cables.
